Stephen Abelow is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Sports Traumatology at the Clinica CEMTRO, Madrid Spain, a FIFA Center of Excellence, and a Professor of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Traumatology, Hon. at the Universidad Catolica San Antonio de Murcia, Spain. He is the Medical Director of the Lake Tahoe Sports Medicine Center, South Lake Tahoe, California, USA. Dr. Abelow was the 1st Chairman of Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine for SICOT (International Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Society) from 2008-2018. He is the past Treasurer of the SICOT Foundation. He received his MD at Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and completed a specialization in orthopaedic surgery in 1978 at Tufts New England Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He is Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the AAOS, AOSSM, AANA, ORS, ISAKOS, SICOT, and ICRS. Dr. Abelow was the Medical Director of the World Professional Ski Tour for 19 seasons. He is an expert in winter sports medicine injuries. He has been a Master Instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America for knee arthroscopy and shoulder arthroscopy and an Associate Master Instructor for ankle arthroscopy. He is a past President of the Orthopaedic Laser Society of North America and is an acknowledged expert on the use of lasers in Orthopaedic Surgery. He has given numerous presentations, symposiums, and instructional course lectures on cartilage repair and regeneration for AAOS, AOSSM, AANA, ORS,SICOT, ISAKOS, and ICRS. Dr. Abelow was one of the first orthopaedic surgeons in the world to help develop and publish arthroscopic techniques for matrix autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI) in 2002. Dr Abelow’s clinical interests include sports injuries, cartilage regeneration, ligament and tendon regeneration, and orthobiology. He is a Doctor Honoris Causa specializing in Cartilage Regeneration at the Clinica CEMTRO in Madrid, Spain.
