Kentaro Onishi is a Mayo-trained sports medicine expert at RegenCore Method clinic in San Francisco, California. He is the past Director of University of Pittsburgh Sports Medicine (PM&R) Program where he also served as the Director of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Innovation. He has a keen interest in uncovering the unknowns on overuse tendinopathy through clinical and basic science studies . He had published over 70 peer-reviewed publications in the last decade to go along with one book (“Tendinopathy” from Springer Co.Ltd. Amazon’s #1 New Release Orthopedic book in 2021). Additionally, he has helped advance the field of regenerative medicine with his work on the biomechanical integrities of ultrasound-guided ATFL ligament repair along with early clinical data.
Dr. Onishi helped the IOC research team at Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic games, becoming the first researcher to formally study and publish the benefit of sideline/venue diagnostic ultrasound on the Olympic athletes.
Dr. Onishi has a keen interest in advancing orthobiologics and regenerative medicine. He received the Best Original Research Paper Award from the Foundation of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (FPMR) in 2017 with his work on mechano-transduction on human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells when cells were expelled from clinical needles. In 2020, his research team received the prestigious J. Goldner Award from the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) for discovering the protective effect of metformin, a commonly used diabetic drug), against overuse related changes in Achilles tendon.
Dr. Onishi has traveled around the globe and is credited with over 100 international presentations in the most recent decade.
