Dr. Christos D. Papageorgiou was born in Arta, Greece on 6th November 1960. His obtained his Medical Degree from the Medical School of the University of Ioannina in 1986 and completed the Orthopedic Residency Program of the University Hospital of Ioannina in 1996. In 1997 he defended his thesis and and received his PhD degree from the Medical School of the University of Ioannina.
Following the completion of his residency program, he completed a 2-years Postdoctoral Clinical Research Fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the MSRC, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the University of Pittsburgh 1997-1999under supervision of Dr. Freddie H.Fu and Dr Savio L-Y Woo.
In 1999 he returned and worked as a Consultant in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the University Hospital of Ioannina in Greece, while in 2013 he proclaimed the position of Director In Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the same hospital.
In November 2002 Dr. Papageorgiou C.D was proclaimed as a Visiting Professor at the Department of Orhopaedic Surgery of the University of Pittsburgh (“A.B. Ferguson Distinguished professorship for Research”).
He was also the winner of the “Albert Trillat” Young Investigator Award at the 1999 ISAKOS congress.
At the meeting of the American Society of Biomechanics in 1999 he was chosen as a finalist candidate for the Journal of Biomechanics Award (co–author).
He has been an author and co – author of more than 50 articles (indexed in Pubmed) which have been cited in more than 2500 articles.
During March and April 2000 he visited Asia and Australia as one of the three Traveling Fellows of ESSKA – WPAOSSM .
He has also been a Visiting Fellow in Spine Surgery, Adult Reconstruction Surgery and Orthopaedic Trauma at the Orthopaedic Department of the Pittsburg’s University Medical Center at the year 2005.
He is very active in the knee ligament biology and biomechanics, bone tunnel healing, as well as the meniscus research and he has given numerous lectures on these topics in national and international meetings.
His name is related to the first successful meniscus transplantation (2005), as well as the first double bundle ACL reconstruction (2000) in Greece.
He is an active member of several orthopedic organizations including ORS, AAOS, ICRS, ISAKOS, ESSKA, BASAKOS.
In 2017 he served as a Program Chair of the International Symposium on Ligaments & Tendons – XVI (ISL&T-XVI) San Diego California 2017.
He has been elected as the president of the Balkan Society of Arthroscopy, Sports Traumatology & Knee Surgery for the years 2019-2022.
Also, the Orthopedic Department of the University Hospital of Ioannina was approved as an ISAKOS Teaching Center under Christos D. Papageorgiou supervision.
He is a founding member of the Greek Arthroscopy Society Knee Surgery and Sports Injuries. ̋George Noulis ̋ (E.A.E).
